Books4Kids Jamaica’s 10th Book Distribution begins with start of 2017 school year.

Books4Kids Jamaica - Sunday, September 10, 2017

MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA, September 4, 2017: Books4Kids Jamaica announced today the charity has started its 2017 book distribution, during which sponsors will turn out to personally deliver book bags to 11,500 children in approximately 120 schools across all 14 parishes.

The charity will kicked off its 10th annual distribution today the first day of school and will continue to deliver books to children during the first 6 weeks of the school year. Through the Books4Kids program, four and five year old children receive a book bag containing a 300-page Brain Quest Workbook, a reading book, crayons and a pencil, while three-year-old Kindergarten students receive a small reading book, crayons and a pencil.

It is expected that the total number of schools to receive books will exceed 120 this year as the charity continues to add more schools to its program, expanding its effort to promote early childhood literacy and numeracy. The program this year is adding schools in St. Thomas to the distribution list. Click here http://www.books4kidsjamaica.com/2017-book-distribution

Many of the charity’s sponsors are expected to take part in this year’s distribution, including Delta Air Lines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, jetBlue Airways, Jamaica Tours Limited, Billy Craig Insurance, Hanover Charities, Grand Palladium Lady Hamilton Resort & Spa, Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, Couples Resorts, AJAS Aviation Services, Half Moon Hotel, Seaboard Marine Jamaica, the Orocabessa Foundation, Golden Eye and the RJR Foundation. As in the past, several MPs are also expected hand out books at local schools in support of the effort.

Said Ms. Nordia Craig, Manager, Business Development and Marketing of The Gleaner Company (Media) Limited; “The greatest gift that someone can receive is knowledge. At The Gleaner Company (Media) Limited we record and report relevant information and make that information easily accessible to the public. In order for persons to take advantage of the information on our multiple platforms, however, they must first be empowered with basic reading tools”

Continued Ms. Craig; “Our partnership with The Palmyra Foundation's Books4Kids Jamaica programme ensures that infants across Jamaica have access to the reading tools that their economic circumstances make inaccessible. Over 60,000 infants have benefitted from this programme so far and we appreciate this opportunity to continue to partner with The Palmyra Foundation to have a lasting and positive impact on our society.”

This year’s books were shipped to the island courtesy of Seaboard & Freight Jamaica Ltd.

“Seaboard Marine is delighted to once again partner with The Palmyra Foundation for the seventh year, on this venture which is so positive for our children and for Jamaica!” says Coreen Williams, Director of Marketing, Seaboard Marine.

Local transportation company Jamaica Tours Limited (JTL) is providing its transportation services for the 8th year running. In addition to books and educational materials, Books4Kids will be bringing books, footballs, shoes and bags of rice courtesy of Food for the Poor to schools located in remote areas of the island.

Books4Kids Jamaica wishes to thank the many sponsors, corporations and individuals who have made this year’s book distribution possible through donations of services, items and monetary contributions. The majority of funds for this year’s book distribution were raised through the charity’s 2017 Online Charity Auction featuring more than 100 worldwide vacation experiences, flights, cruises, services and art generously donated by sponsors. Books4Kids Jamaica also thanks The Ministry of Education, The Ministry of Finance, The Jamaican Customs Department and Keith Thorpe Ltd. for their assistance in getting the books to Jamaica.

BOOKS4KIDS JAMAICA RAISES OVER US$100,000

Books4Kids Jamaica - Sunday, May 15, 2016

“Charity to distribute Workbooks, reading books, crayons and pencils to 10,000 children in parishes across the island at the start of the 2016/ 2017 school year.”

MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA, MAY 16, 2016: Books4Kids Jamaica announced today the completion of its 5th Annual Online Charity Auction and fundraising effort, raising a record breaking US$100,313 towards books and educational materials for Kindergarten children across the country. In addition to the charity’s online auction raising US$88,000, the early childhood education initiative has received more than US$12,000 in monetary contributions making the final tally just over US$100,000. Said Books4Kids Jamaica Chairperson Ragni Trotta; “We are extremely touched by the support we have received from our friends in the local and international travel and hospitality industry, which is reflected in this year’s incredible results.”

This year, the charity tempted bidders from 9 countries with more than 100 auction items to include airline tickets, luxury cruises, golf experiences, restaurant meals, electronics, luxury items and hotel stays all over the world. Said William Craig, Chairman and CEO of Billy Craig Insurance, program sponsor since the initiatives very beginning in 2008; “I just love supporting Books4Kids Jamaica and knowing that every dollar I spend in the auction goes towards buying books for school children every year, year after year.”

Glenn Lawrence, CEO of Couples Resorts, ran away with this year’s most coveted auction item; a 12-day All-inclusive Cruise for Two with the Holland America Line to the Destination of Choice. Said Lawrence, the winning bidder of the cruise and several other items; “The auction provided an excellent range of prizes for good value all around. The real time auction platform gave you a pretty interactive approach to the bidding process and the overall experience was first class.”

The charity celebrated the last hours of the 2016 fundraising effort with a Charity Auction Party at Usain Bolt’s Track & Records in Kingston on the evening of Saturday May 7th with radio host Heather ‘Brown Sugar’ Grant rallying the crowds to engage in the bidding. With airline ticket being among the auction’s most popular items, long term auction sponsors Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways showed their support for the early childhood education initiative by attending the Books4Kids Jamaica Auction Party. Said Leslie Brown, General Manager of JetBlue Airways Jamaica and Cayman Islands; "JetBlue applauds the efforts of Books4Kids and is a proud supporter of its efforts to better the lives of Jamaica's children. Youth and Education is a key part of our efforts in corporate social responsibility and in our mission to inspire humanity. Our partnership with Books4Kids is one that we value highly as we work to live this mission."

With 12 Kingston schools among last year’s distribution list of 90 schools island-wide, Books4Kids Jamaica hopes to expand its book distributions in the inner city areas of Kingston and add two more parishes to this year’s distribution. Finished Ragni Trotta, Chairperson of Books4Kids Jamaica; “While our primary goal is to raise enough fund to continue supporting the 90 schools and 8,600 children that currently form part of our program, the success of this year’s fundraising effort will allow us to help even more children this year. Helping Kindergarten children get the tools they need to learn to read and write is a clearly a cause that resonates with many and we wish to thank everyone who made cash donations or contributed to the auction by donating auction items, participating in the bidding or helping us spread the word.”
